In 2019, Pastor Charles’s challenge for Kingswood Church is to read through the New Testament chronologically.
As United Methodists, we believe the Holy Spirit works today in our thoughtful study of the Scriptures, especially as we study them together, seeking to relate the old words to life’s present realities. But we also recognize that many of us in our own midst haven’t read the Bible. We are seeking to help each other open up the Bible in 2020 in a spirit of community with other believers — some of whom have read the Bible before, but many of whom are hoping to read some of the great stories of the Bible for the first time.
What’s the payoff?
This is a great way to regularly study God’s word with other believers. At the end of the year, participants successfully completing the challenge will also be announced in worship.
How do I participate?
Sign up using the instructions below. You’ll get monthly emails with information about the challenge and questions that go along with your reading. Submit your answers to Rev. Charles as you read, and receive his encouragement along your faith journey as you complete the challenge!
Why should I join?
John Wesley, the founder of the United Methodist Church, described several means of grace — ways God works invisibly in His disciples. Among those on our path to devotion are: reading, meditating and studying the scriptures, prayer, and sharing our faith with others. What better way to grow in grace than by studying God’s word and discussing it as we grow in our faith together!
Step 1: Complete the readings
Each month, the readings for the month will included in the monthly e-newsletter. You can also find the complete set of readings below. There is some “down time” each month for reflection and catch-up.
Step 2: Answer the monthly questions
The questions will be the same each month, but your answers will be based on that month’s readings. The questions are:
- What is/are your favorite verse(s) this month?
- What is something interesting you have learned this month?
- What principle or truth will you strive to apply to your life (give name of book, chapter and verse)?
Send your answers to the monthly questions to readthebible@kingswood.church, and receive encouragement from Pastor Charles along the way!
Step 3: Talk about it!
Tell everyone what you’re doing…
- In your small group or Sunday School class
- On social media
Tell everyone that you’re participating, using the hashtags #KUMCReadingChallenge!
